Breaking news coming in from the east is that Sharp have stated they are to sell 3 percent of the company to Korean giants, Samsung.
Samsung said Wednesday it will invest $111.5 million(635 millioner kr) in Sharp to secure a supply of large-size LCD panels.
Sharp said in a statement that it will supply large TV panels and expand shipments of smaller LCDs for use in mobile devices to Samsung.
Sharp says it is currently supplying Samsung Electronics with LCD panels and through this alliance will be able “secure its source of revenue from LCD business forming the company’s core”.
Sharp already supplies LCD panels for (noen av) Samsung's 32 inch, 40 inch and 60 inch TVs, said Nakane. Samsung also buys screens from Taiwanese makers.
Although Sharp is one of Samsung's smallest suppliers, its importance to the Korean company will likely grow as demand for large-screen TVs over 60 inches burgeons, analysts say
A deal would come as Sharp, which received a $4.4 billion bailout from its banks in October, tries to boost LCD plant utilization, particularly at its Kameyama factory in central Japan.
It has had to slash production of Apple iPad screens at the facility since the start of the year, other sources told Reuters in January, as consumer demand shifts to the iPad mini, for which Sharp is not a supplier.
An agreement would also be a rare cross border deal between the two rival countries and the first time the South Korean TV maker has ever taken a leading stake in a Japanese rival. Japan's big three TV set makers, Sharp, Sony and Panasonic are struggling to overcome losses as Samsung clobbers them in overseas markets.
