Make no mistake this is an utterly straightforward but well-featured amplifier, equipped with fully-defeatable tone and balance controls, a Rec selector dial (so you can listen one one source while another is being recorded) plus a comprehensive remote control.

Vinyl junkies get the benefit of a high quality (moving magnet) phono input while five analogue stereo inputs (plus one output for dubbing enthusiasts) should take care of most sources. Pre-out terminals allow additional power amplifiers to be connected as necessary.

The many millions of of iPod/iPhone enthusiasts out there aren't forgotten either. This amplifier features Onkyo's ingenious RI (Remote Interactive) system so it can be hooked up to one of our award-winning docks... the new DS-A3 is a perfect complement.

Usefully, a pair of switched AC outlets at the rear allow other components to be powered from the amplifier too, minimising clutter at the power socket.

Based around tried and tested Onkyo technologies the A-9377 is a true musical powerhouse, delivering more enough power to drive even the most difficult of speaker loads. A beefy, overspecified transformer plus audiophile-grade low ESR (Equivalent Series resistance) 8200uf main capacitors are key to its enormous musical drive.

A low NFB (Negative Feedback) design the A-9377 achieves a frequency response up to 100kHz making it an eminently suitable candidate for replaying hi-resolution sources such as SACD, as well as more traditional CDs, DVDs etc.

Particular care has been taken to avoid audible distortion resulting from fluctuations in ground potential during playback. This is something that's compounded when circuits are connected to the power supply in a loop (a common solution) which is why the A-9377 employs a fully 'closed-circuit' design. That means each circuit is separately linked to the power supply which cancels individual circuit noise and keeps the ground potential clean and noise-free.

The ability to deliver instantaneous high current is essential for true musical fidelity and this amplifier won't be found wanting in that respect. With a fully discrete output stage (with transistors kept wholly separate from each other) the A-9377's power delivery remains clean and smooth, free of the audible 'clipping' that occurs when a poorly specified output stage is overstressed.

Weighing in at nearly 11kg the A-9377 is, as is Onkyo's tradition, very solidly constructed, underpinned by a high-rigidity, anti-resonance chassis fronted by a retro-looking, thick aluminium-alloy fascia designed to evoke the values of a previous era.

For the buyer on a budget looking for a well-built, authoritative sounding and feature-packed amplifier, there are few better prospects than the new Onkyo A-9377.

*Power output measured at 4W, 1kHz, 2 channels driven IEC
