    American 65/70 mm releases: (utvalg)

    - Around the World in Eighty Days (1956) – Todd-AO; shot twice, with cameras running at 30 and 24 frame/s, respectively

    - South Pacific (1958 ) Todd-AO

    Blu-ray Review: South Pacific (1958 ) | High-Def Digest

If ever a movie deserved a lavish video treatment, it's 'South Pacific,' and Fox complies with a knock-your-socks-off 1080p/MPEG-4 AVC transfer. Filmed in Todd-AO, itself a primitive high-definition process, 'South Pacific' benefits from exceptional clarity and a lush grain structure that lends the image marvelous texture, balance, and depth. Three-strip Technicolor was long gone by the time 'South Pacific' went into production, but this transfer features gorgeously saturated hues that truly pop off the screen.

The source material is practically spotless and no digital enhancements distract us from the pristine image. This is a spectacular effort from Fox, which continues to treat its classic films with the care and reverence they so richly deserve. Bravo!

    - Exodus (1960) – Super Panavision 70

    - Lawrence of Arabia (1962) – Super Panavision 70

Steven Spielberg and a few guests viewed Steve's personal 70mm print of "LOA" at the Aero theatre, in a private screening, in May. It's a mag sound print produced in 1989, at the time of the "25th anniversary" restoration work by Bob Harris. The print looked wonderful.

    - It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) – Ultra Panavision 70; shown in 70 mm Cinerama

    - Cleopatra (1963) – Todd-AO (shooting started in CinemaScope, changed to 3-panel Cinerama and finally to Todd-AO. The anamorphic and 3-panel footage was discarded.)

    Blu-ray Review: 2001: A Space Odyssey | High-Def Digest

The print is in excellent condition and isn't marred by softness, edge enhancement, scratches, or any distracting instances of source noise. There isn't a hint of the blockiness that haunts 'A Clockwork Orange' and the transfer easily surpasses the new 2-disc Special Edition DVD (as well as every other previous home video release of the film). As I watched this Blu-ray, I searched for something to complain about, but I'm happy to report that I failed to find a single thing.

”Executive producer/star Kirk Douglas hauled the Technirama cameras to the Norwegian fjords to photograph The Vikings , directed by Richard Fleischer in 1958. The film is pure action-adventure and an absolute blast to watch Douglas, Tony Curtis, and Ernest Borgnine chew the scenery and everything else in sight, including Janet Leigh. The Jack Cardiff photography was stunning, which is an adjective that could be applied to virtually all Technirama films, good or bad, or for any film shot by Jack Cardiff.”

Blu-ray Review: North by Northwest: 50th Anniversary Edition (Digibook) | High-Def Digest

The restoration price tag reportedly topped $1 million, but it was money (very) well spent, as 'North by Northwest' comes closer to achieving perfection than any other 1080p classic movie transfer I've seen. The 50-year-old film looks so good, in fact, it puts many recent Blu-ray releases to shame.

Shot in VistaVision (a short-lived, higher resolution widescreen process developed by Paramount in the mid-1950s), 'North by Northwest' is a natural for a Blu-ray makeover, and its exquisitely balanced color and contrast, along with its fine grain structure (a VistaVision staple), produce a crisp, dimensional, utterly pleasing viewing experience

Robert Harris: A few words about...™ North by Northwest -- in Blu-ray

    - Last Train from Gun Hill (1959)
    - One-Eyed Jacks (1960)

”Marlon Brando took over the director's chair from Stanley Kubrick and actually wound up with a very solid piece of film making. One-Eyed Jacks was one of the last films made in VistaVision, and it may well be the most beautifully photographed. Even Karl Malden managed to look great, at least in the second part of the film.”
