Noen rosende ord under.
I actually recently (as in 1.5 months ago) upgraded my A2-300 to an A7s-450. I got the free eQ.2. can tell you that this sub has so much dynamic headroom in my listening room, it is hard to explain. I'm VERY pleased. I'm sure the CS18.1 would be in the ballpark as well. However, having zero experience with the CS 18.1, I can say that the A7s-450 is AMAZING for music or movies. Extremely dynamic bass at every frequency. I get output down to about 11 Hz at my listening position. If you have Audyssey or Pioneer's MCACC, you don't even need the eQ.2. I was playing ACDC's live version of Shoot to Thrill and Thunderstruck, averaging over 104dB (c-weighted) and the driver on the eD A7s-450 was barely moving upon my visual inspection. Pretty incredible. Huge amounts of dynamic, deep, full bass and I had to remove the grill and kneel down just to verify that the cone was even moving. I have mine placed in a corner and listening position is along a rear wall. NO guarantee for performance here in any room but mine (and every room is different), but this sub has exceeded all of my expectations.
I, too, was stuck in between the Epik Empire (2x15") and the A7s-450 from eD. I struggled with the lack of technical info about the amplifier or the drivers used in the Empire. With 22mm of linear excursion from the 19O.v2 18" driver from eD (and mechanical clearance to about 28mm if I recall correctly), I had a difficult time trying to justify cutting amplifier power by almost 75% and using two 15" drivers of unknown BL, XMAX, etc. I asked Epik, but got a slow an vague response. I even informed them that I wanted some of these specs and that I was cross shopping with eD. Still no info. They were very professional and courteous...just no info. I called up eD and talked to a couple different guys...including one who was involved in the design of the A7s-450. The amp actually puts-out its rated RMS wattage at 4ohms (a LOT of amplifiers do not). The driver is QC'd prior to installation. The cabinet is very inert and 140lbs. The guys at eD did NOT try to tell me that this would be the 'best' of anything...they didn't use superlatives at all actually. They spoke in facts and numbers (i.e. "How big is your listening room so we can figure out what amount of driver displacement you'll need for your average listening levels."). They told me the known limits of the subwoofer as a system (driver, amp, cabinet, etc.) and helped me CALCULATE what amount of air I needed to displace to meet my needs... at first, they were more concerned that I would need two and were very honest about the sub's practical limits. I was sold. I am super happy. That and eD didn't trash Epik...they expressed a LOT of respect for them but admitted to only knowing what was published on the website about the Empire. They calculated the excursion levels required of the Empire to exceed the output levels of the A7s-450. Each of the Empire's 15" drivers would need to be capable of at least 18mm of one-way excursion (bare minimum) and they doubted that 300W delivered to a 15" driver in a sealed alignment would be able to to take full advantage of 18mm of one-way Xmax. The guys at eD told me that their 18" 19O.v2 driver (the one employed in the A7s-450) has 40% more surface area than their 15" 16O.v2 driver (used in the A5-350). Not slamming Epik's info at all...but here were calculations that I verified (they were not complicated) that eD uses for their own products that showed the A7s-450 being better able to meet my needs than the Empire from Epik. Basically, the Empire's drivers would have to each possess a BAM (bare-a$$-minimum) Xmax of 18mm one-way to equal the linear displacement of the eD A7s-450's 18" driver...AND they would need more power than 600w RMS between the two of them to accurately use that Xmax in a sealed enclosure. That's what I based my decision on. I have not regretted it.
I'm sure the Epik Empire is a good sub, but being in an information blackout as to the weight of the drivers's magnets, the XMAX, even a frequency response chart at different volume levels...ANYTHING. For my first monster sub, i wasn't willing to gamble.
As an aside, I sold the A2-300 to a friend who USED to be a BOSE fan (shoot, he even worked at a Bose store)....he was blown away by the performance of even an entry level true subwoofer. He starting laughing and cussing like a teenage boy who just discovered the existence of playboy. Anyways...it's always great to hate on Bose.
