"Plans for a "one format to rule them all" unified high definition DVD format seems to now be officially scrapped after Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. failed to reach agreement in their negotiations on a standard format, it was reported today by the Daily Yomiuri Online."
"Although everyone pretty much knew it anyways, all hope for a unified successor to the DVD is now officially over. Toshiba has announced yestserday that it has ended its talks with Sony on trying to unify their two formats – HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, respectively – into one format so that the market would not be crowded with multiple, very similar formats. As it stands, half the movie studios and Microsoft side with HD-DVD (the Xbox 360 will be able to upgrade to the HD-DVD, probably just to spite Sony’s Blu-Ray), and the other half side with Sony’s technology (which will be featured in the PlayStation 3).
This is sad news for Toshiba, whose support is waning in the industry; then again, it is just an official announcement, and we have all kind of figured this was going to happen for awhile now, anyways."
Mr. Gordon was referring to a recent report in the Wall Street Journal that said the original rollout of HD-DVD hardware is likely to be delayed, and that HD-DVD-backing movie studios were quoted to be scaling back their plans for launch.
Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida said on Wednesday talks between Sony and his company were off. “We’ve been working towards unification. But talks are now stalled. We will press ahead with the product launch as planned,” he said in Tokyo in an interview with Reuters.
“Regrettably, two different types of products seem set to hit the market. But this is the kind of technology that will be around for five or 10 years. Efforts should be made continuously to make unification happen,” Mr. Nishida added.
Wolfgang Schlichting, an analyst with IDC, was not surprised that the two have currently failed to create a unified format. “The camps were too far apart for an easy compromise which each side would win,” Mr. Schlichting said.
Mr. Schlichting believes it’s unlikely for the two to eventually agree on one common format. “In the long run, one will be winning and the other will be losing,” he said. “Some products will try to bridge the two formats, but there is a price penalty for that.”
The entry of two different DVD formats in the market will lead to a great amount of confusion between customers as they decide which format to pick. Some expect a repeat of the chaos that ensued during the late 1970s when consumers were given the choice between VHS and Betamax video recorders."

TOKYO — Toshiba Corp.'s plan to introduce HD DVD players ahead of Blu-ray Disc (BD) players in the U.S. may be delayed, the company said.
Mainichi Shimbun, a daily newspaper here, reported Thursday (Sept. 1) that the U.S. launch of HD DVD players would be delayed until next spring. Toshiba said it would stick to its original launch schedule by the end of this year in Japan, but the U.S. launch has not been determined, the spokeswoman said.
Toshiba is discussing the timing for introducing HD DVD players with content providers such as Hollywood studios and U.S. video retailers. "We want to make the HD DVD launch in the United States on a significant scale [with a large number of movie titles], and now we are talking about when is the best timing for that," the Toshiba spokesman said.
A change in the timing of the HD DVD launch represents a critical shift in strategy. One reason is that the Playstation 3 console will hit the market sometime next spring with a BD player function.
The report said Hollywood studios wanted to concentrate on present DVD sales in the coming Christmas sales season before shifting their focus to the HD format.

Følg med på Porno bransjen (I kid you not). Det formatet de masse distribuerer ligger godt ann til å bli det dominerende formatet. Historien gjentar seg selv.
